Gene Mueller

As Gene Mueller crosses the great divide at radio city ... from the 'home of the hits' to the 'biggest stick in the state,' I wanted to share some thoughts on Gene and my time with him at WKTI. I wrote this right as Gene was making his announcement, but held it until today.

In my 7 years as the program director for WKTI, I do not think I have ever met anyone like Gene Mueller. First of all – everyone likes Gene. Can you think of anyone in your life that has no detractors? Second of all, Gene is about a dedicated a co-worker as you would ever find. At the first hint of anything happening that is news, Gene is right back at the station – no matter the day or time. It is also not uncommon to see Gene working at his computer or in a production studio long after the show is over – taking that extra step to deliver a great product.

I'll never forget how quickly Gene moved on 9/11 from goofy morning show stuff, to serious news coverage. He was adamant that we not report anything that was coming across as "unconfirmed." Being that there was no play-book for that day, I turned the station over to him.

But you have to admit, Gene Mueller’s sense of humor is his most endearing quality. Gene has the ability to deliver a punch-line that may be biting – but with such a sense of innocence that you find yourself drawn to him. Remember when Reitman had to go make piece with Jimmy the Clown before the Circus Parade (Reitman had inadvertently insulted Jimmy and he would not go on stage)? When it was over, Gene asked Reitman if he had to kiss Jimmy “where there ain’t no grease-paint?” Funny – and to the point. That’s Gene Mueller.

The biggest thing that surprised me about Gene when I got to 'KTI was his aversion to the spotlight. I just figured a guy with his credentials and long illustrious career would want the bright light on him. The truth is the exact opposite. He never wants to be the the story. When we were discussing his last days at 'KTI, I jokingly said I couldn't get the Riverside - so I booked the Pabst. He gave me the most serious look of pain I have ever seen from him. Just kidding - I said.

Now that I am no longer Gene's supervisor/boss/program director - whatever you want to call it - I was trying to figure out where we stand. Colleagues - sure. Friends: absolutely.

When will you notify us of why Gino is no longer part of the morning show?

I agree with everything you said about Gene...he's wonderful and we love him. I am happy for him and this opportunity if it is what he wants.

Gino is also wonderful and we love him, too. When will you be posting your tribute to him?

KTI should be ashamed of themselves...not allowing Gene to say goodbye to loyal listeners with grace and dignity and honor the way Bob did. And what you did to Gino is inexcusable.

I am saddened...for myself who will miss the show terribly, for Gino who is irreplaceable, and for the new hosts who will be starting their job with listeners (maybe) who are already feeling negative about the new show.

Way to go KTI.

Hey I'll try to respond to both of these in one post (man, I gotta learn how to use this thing - huh?)

Gino is no longer part of the morning show because we are brining in an entire new show. With Reitman, Amy, and Mueller all leaving - we thought it was time to bring in the next KTI morning show. It was amazing and unheard of that we kept one group of individuals together as co-workers for so long. But eventually, people move on.

As for not letting Gene say goodbye, he would have hated that. He wanted nothing to do with that. As we have stated over and over again: for Gene - a long drawn out goodbye would not have been dignified. Anyone who knows Gene would immediately agree.

I hope that answers your questions. Thanks for the feedback - feel free to write all you want.

Maybe it's time to call in Columbo...Lassie...Adrian Monk. Within hours of announcing their departure, Gino and Gene have literally disappeared from the faces of the 'KTI web site. With no way to contact them, thanking them for all they have done for Milwaukee, and all they have done for thousands of us as their voices were the first thing many of us heard each morning when the alarm went off. It is truly as if they never existed, as if Management felt no one would notice. Well, they were wrong. People have noticed, people do care, and people are not happy. Shame on 'KTI for not treating them with the decency they both deserve.

I read in the Journal/Sentinel that Gina was "shown the door". Whatever the truth may be, I'm sad to see both Gino and Gene gone. I would have loved to see Lips moved into the morning spot. I've been a KTI listener since Reitman and Mueller started. I'm really disappointed in the station and, therefore, sadly, my last day listening to KTI was yesterday...

I have to agree with the other former KTI listeners...
How could Gino & Gene just be gone? Is this why Amy left...did she know this shake up was coming down the pike?
I really enjoyed listening to Gene, Gino & Jenna, too. (What happened to her?) I grew up listening to Gene & Reitman...you've lost another listener!

I also have been a listener to Reitman and Mueller since day one. I never missed a show. They were great. The frosting on the cake was Gino. I cannot believe how all this came down and quite frankly am still in shock. Too bad there is no loyalty on your part for someone who has given his all!! I guess my loyalties have now changed because I will no longer listening to your station either.

Here are the addresses for Gene and Gino's blogs. Gene's been keeping his up, I'm hoping Gino will start again soon. At least we can leave them messages.

I understand Gene's desire to move into his dream job and I'm happy for him. But with Gino's talent, personality, and familiarity with the area, I don't understand why he couldn't stay on as executive producer of the show. Think about what a great mentor he would be for Matthew and Erin. Why bring in that AJ dude? One winter here and he'll be back in Florida.

So, in about six months we've lost Reitmann, the REAL Flashback Friday (yes, that was me who emailed you at 8:05 a.m. about it the day it happened), Amy, Gene and Gino. But we've lost so much more - John Jurkovich, Julia Sweeney and Joe Queenan just to name a few.

I've switched morning shows in the past during different phases of life, but have always come back to the tried and true. Probably not this time.

If management at KTI really understands it's audience, it made the conscience decision to lose the current audience in the hope of a new audience. Does this sound like it makes good business sense? Not only did they completely change the morning team; they rudely ousted the old team. In this day and age where people feel there is no job security, they demonstrated that realty publicly.

I won't be listening to KTI anymore.

Mr. Walker:
You are truly a classless individual. First, you kick Gene and Gino (some of the finest radio broadcasters around) to the curb, and then you don't even give them (or their listeners) the respect and dignity they deserve in being able to say goodbye. You abruptly pull the plug on a loyal broadcaster-listener relationship that has existed for decades. Don't their years of service to your company deserve better than that? Second, you run a gutless Green Day "thank you" tribute to Gene - how insultingly insincere to him and your many "now former" listeners. What a coward you are. At least, since I will no longer be tuning in to your radio station (it has already been deleted from the presets in my car), I don't have to listen to that piece of garbage anymore. Lastly, when one reads through the litany of complaints on your blog, you have a complete and utter lack of class, dignity and professionalism and post comments which "lash out" at some of the individuals who have posted negative comments. Can't handle the well-deserved criticism coming your way?

Take a lesson from Gene and Gino, who are true professionals, gentlemen and Milwaukee treasures.

You obviously don't understand the midwest mindset, it's about loyalty. Having genuine, sincere, witty fellow midwesterners to listen to is why people tuned in. Obviously you are going for the younger demographic, and not those of us who have been listening to your station for more than 25 years. However, as we have seen repeatedly, age discrimination is nothing new at Journal Sentinel Communications (Melodie Wilson, Mike Gousha, Jim Ott to name just a few). It's about time that someone slapped your company with an age discrimination lawsuit.

Your slick little bunch of imported DJs will have an uphill battle to build up the sort of following your station previously enjoyed.

With the number of listeners you have lost, and the countless more former listeners who have not posted on your blog - it is you, sir, who should be shown the door.

Dear Bob,
Like others who have posted here I too was suprised to hear the news and was totally caught off guard.

I began listening to Reitman and Mueller while working overnight at Target on Brown Deer rd. It was a time to look forward too. I moved away for years only to return in 2006 where I was pleasantly suprised to hear they still were on the air.

I had the opportunity to meet Gino, Amy and Bob one september morning as the "Hollywood Hotdish Reporter" and I still talk about it to this day.
I regret not meeting Gene but maybe someday i'll have the chance.

I personally want to wish them all luck in their new endeavors and I welcome the new morning show hosts and also wish them all the luck for they have huge shoes to fill.

Times change and I believe a positive attitude is always the best way to start the day!!!!

Again, good luck to the new crew as well as the old.

I work in HR so I find this all very interesting. First of all, I have never seen a situation - anywhere - where somebody was releived of a job and allowed to say goodbye. No matter the job. I am the poor person who has escourt people out of the buidling just for legal purposes. I am acutally shocked that you let Gino say goodbye knowing how things work in HR. I will miss Gene and Gino on KTI, but to call this a classless move is just naive. As much as everyone liked Gene and Gino, they were employees of WKTI. It is unprecedented that they even got to say goodbye. And I see that Gino will still be in the building. My company would never allow that. It's just not the way things are done. Sorry to burst your bubble. Good luck Gene at 620 and Gino at channel 4 or whever you go.

I too am proud to say that I have been a listener since Reitman and Mueller started...& It is sad to say that it all has come to an end so abruptly. I too shall search elsewhere for a new radio station.
Good Luck Gene! Good Luck Gino.

I am another long time listener who is very disappointed in the whole situation. I looked forward every morning to listening to the guys and Amy.

Mr. Walker, I don't know what you were thinking but you were wrong.

These comments are only a handful of people that are actually voicing their opinions, most are not. Alot of those that are not, are just as unhappy with WKTI as I am.

I even tried to listen to the new morning show.....sorry they stink and I will not be listening any longer.

I tried...I really tried to get past my shock and disappointment and wanted to like your new morning show. But I can't. It blows! Not once did I "LOL" while listening to the new morning show. Not once! The new lineup is medicore at best. Nothing special and certainly not something I'd ever look forward to on my drive into work.

I was afraid it "wouldn't be the same" once Bob left. And it wastn't; but somehow the show was still good. Shame on you for ruining a good thing and kudos to you for tuning out thousands of loyal listeners like myself. That is something you certainly have achieved in your career.

I was hoping you'd post a "what do you think of the new morning show" poll on KTI's website - somewhere the public could voice their opinions. But you don't respect your (former) listeners enough to do that.

Am I angry? Yes. Have you lost me as a listener? Most definately. KTI is no longer on my radio preset.

Congrats...you finally have your "7 listeners".

Ditto to all of the previous comments. Waking up to WKTI is a thing of the past. I am now a channel surfer trying to find a new station that appeals to me. I was one of the 7 listeners, so you are now down to 6. My best to Gene and Gino, great memories and laughs for so many years.

We're outa here! KTI is a thing of the past. The morning show is lacking, lacking, lacking. Big mistake on your part.

Anonymous said...

The only thing that I can figure out is that this was a financial move on KTI's part. I would certainly hope that you got your new rookies at a much cheaper price as they certainly have a long way to go to be a team on any station, much less, fill the shoes on the morning show at KTI. It truly makes me sad that I no longer have this show to look forward to, but I know one thing...I wont be back.
